Frank Jonathan Whittle was the son of former National Hunt jockey Frank Whittle, who rode winners during the 1950s and 60s. He began riding over jumps in the late 1980s and recorded six wins.
He was a conditional with former leading National Hunt jockey Jeremy Glover and had his first ride when finishing a good third on Pipers Copse, trained by Peter Cundell, in the E.B.F. N.H. Flat Race (Division 1) at Newbury on November 4, 1987.
His initial success came more than two years later when Hiram B. Birdbath, trained by Jeremy Glover, led three out and drew clear to land the Walesby Novices’ Hurdle on the all-weather at Southwell on February 12, 1990. The pair had finished second at Wolverhampton seven days earlier on their first outing together, but they finished last on their two outings after their Southwell success.
Frank had another winner before the season ended when Invasion, owned by Lady Ann Bentinck and also trained by Jeremy Glover, ran on strongly from the last and beat Garry Odder by 12 lengths in the Boon Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso on March 21.
He made a good start to the 1990/91 season with four wins by the end of October, all of them on Hiram B. Birdbath in all-weather hurdles at Southwell. First was the Rose County Handicap Hurdle on August 27 by five lengths, then the Blidworth Handicap Hurdle on September 26 by only half a length. The third success was even narrower, for it was only by a short head that they defeated Ha’penny Nap in the Autumn Leaves Handicap Hurdle on October 13. Finally there was a slightly easier win when beating Centenary Star by two lengths in the Sycamore Handicap Hurdle on October 20.
Hopes of a fifth success were dashed five days later when Major Freddie beat the gallant gelding by 20 lengths in the Jack Levy Memorial Trophy Handicap Hurdle. Steve Williams took over in the saddle when Hiram B. Birdbath reappeared in March and Frank had no more wins. However, by virtue of those four Southwell victories Frank ended up as the leading conditional on the all-weather 1990/91 season.
