Philip Martin Johnson rode two winners as an apprentice on the Flat in the mid-1980s before going on to enjoy a measure of success over jumps, riding eight winners.
He began as an apprentice with Henry Candy, for whom he rode his first winner aboard Going Going in the Dusty Miller Handicap at Windsor on May 12, 1986. His only other victory on the Flat was on Tom Rum in the Saltford Apprentice Handicap at Bath on July 15, 1987.
He then rode as a conditional jockey with Martin Pipe and had his initial ride over jumps on Rainbow Lady at Worcester on September 25, 1987, finishing third in the Sparplas Windows Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
The first day of 1988 saw him open his jumping account when Come On Gracie survived a last flight blunder to hold off the challenge of Richard Guest’s mount None Too Dear and land the Haldon Sunday Market Handicap Hurdle at Devon & Exeter by a neck.
He rode for Richard Frost during the 1988/89 season and enjoyed his best campaign with five wins.
His final victory was on the seven-year-old Dolly Wardance, recording a comfortable seven-length success in the Midland Handicap Hurdle at Leicester on the last day of 1990, gaining swift compensation for having finished an unlucky third at Wolverhampton five days earlier.
